Those fishplates look excellent! I've used a 'home made' version of those alignment tools you've pictured. My lift out section is held in position with large metal pins pushed into holes from above. Almost invisible when pushed fully home.

Very carefully just with a cocktail stick. They came off very easily on the Bachmann coaches. Hornby ones might be different.
