Just thought I'd circle back -
GM CDU installed and so far things are looking great.
Realised I ruined 3 other motors in my previous attempts - they are now moving much more slowly, but putting new ones in their place works a treat
An expensive mistake, but a good lesson
thanks all

Re: Solenoid motors heating up

Re: Solenoid motors heating up
Switch contact arcing occurs when the contacts open (break) due to the Bemf from the solinoid coil voltage collapsing as the switch opens. A CDU will eliminate this as its discharged into the coil long before the switches contact opens. A pair of diodes connected in inverse to the feed polarity wil...

Re: Solenoid motors heating up
I still suspect the switch and to check it out I would swap it with another that is working right and see if the problem persists. As I said in my first post and repeated by many I would install a CDU. Once you get arcing on the contacts it is a slippery slope where it simply gets worse over time e...

Re: Solenoid motors heating up
Why are you repeatedly switching the motors? Are you 100% sure none of the momentary switches are remaining On even when the switch lever is in the sprung to centre Off position? A simple multimeter voltage check on each motor will quick prove this. Holding the switches lever over in either directi...

Re: Solenoid motors heating up
thank you both - Yes, the switches are momentary switches and return to centre upon release so current is only flowing briefly. The switches are rated for 5A (https://www.amazon.co.uk/MinticeTM-Momentary-Miniature-Toggle-Dashboard/dp/B01M0LXR0L/ref=sr_1_5?keywords=momentary%2Bswitch&qid=16394785...

Solenoid motors heating up
Hopefully a basic, If not silly, question - Building the first layout, I have fitter 7 pm2 motors. I have an issue with one motor that keeps heating up that the point of the plastic covering the coils melting I checked the wiring and it is all good, and consistent with the other motors. I then took ...
