Re: New layout
If the main layout was at a height of 35mm off the baseboard, the incline would then climb 30mm and the track to the sidings (fiddle yard would drop 35mm giving a 65mm clearance at the bridge. The grades would not be excessive.
Re: Coal mine

Re: Checking for shorts
When testing did you disconnect the power supply or unit feeding the track as this will become part of the circuit and give a resistance reading.

Re: DCC Controller reading decoder, but loco not moving
You mention that all the other loco's work on DC so are you trying to run the problem loco on DC or DCC? If DC then you need to add 4 to cv 29.

Re: Lichen
Hi Steve, I also want to use lichen and if you google preserving lichen with glycerin you will finf what you want to know. Easiest solution is 2 parts lukewarm warm to 1 part glycerin (dye could be added to improve colour. I haven't tried it yet but it's on my list.

Re: Reverse Polarity Switching
Think about the circuit Richard, The ac in is rectified by the single diode and that give on;y half the sine wave out according to which way the diode is facing. I have used this circuit to reverse dc motors on some of my projects so I know for a fact that it works. Both the wires are from the ac so...
