Re: What makes a good layout?

Very interesting how everyone's opinion differs on what they like, or don't like, on a layout. I suppose that's why you see similar , but never exactly the same, layouts throughout the land. The diversity of layouts you see at shows, on YouTube or photo's (on here or elsewhere), shows just how uniqu...

Re: Anyone know what the purpose of..........

"I guess if track is purchased from a "toy" shop , they may not necessarily know that Hornby track is not as good as Peco but from a Hobby shop, they should know the better items to use or at least the differences".

It was me who didn't know the difference :)

Seems you may be right WTD. Wish I'd have known all this when I first started.

Just a big learning 'curve' isn't it :D

Re: Anyone know what the purpose of..........

DD, I think the first photo you posted was not a Peco turnout but a Hornby based on the large plastic V Now i have a latest Peco Code 100 insulfrog and yes, the older style wheels say from Lima with their pizza cutter flanges, do ride up a bit through the frog area and I fixed the problem by replac...

Re: Anyone know what the purpose of..........

Unfortunately commercial turnouts are made to accept many variations in wheels - tyre width & flange depth. Ideally tyre widths & flange depths work well when flangeways are all the same and especially at the frog point, tyre widths are in reality, wide enough to bridge the gap and be suppo...

Re: Anyone know what the purpose of..........

Track laying is more than often the cause of problems. Track needs to be laid on a firm flat surface with the track joined accurately. If it is laid well locos will travel on it without 'many' problems. Generally points will not cause problems. Noted, thanks WTD. And thank you for everyone's input....

As I'm finding out.

Lovely model loco, but very unforgiving on some points though.

Ha ha, great video MG.

If you had those points you could have a OO gauge boot on a stick to kick it over

Re: Anyone know what the purpose of..........

So it is a loco fault not the points. I'm thinking it's because the Heljan 28 is pretty heavy and, combined with the smoothness of the motor, it won't let any points bully it? Whereas, the front pony wheels on some of the steam loco's seem to be very light and loose and easily led astray, as is the...
