Playcraft (Joueff) P10 tank loco

Hi,

I have acquired two of these little HOe/009 locos, virtually unused and they run quite well. However, despite a full service and lubrication they are horribly noisy and I have been told that they are "just like that".

Does anyone have any experience of these and know of any way to quieten them down?

I cant find a clear picture of this loco chassis but from the fuzzy picture I found it looks as if fitting another motor may fix the problem as I assuming the noise is being caused by the motor. You could try looking at a Type 4 Hornby motor which are cheap as chips . You may need to alter the mounting bracket but that is normally not difficult. Have look and put your thinking cap on. It may help if you can put up a photo of it so we can have better look.

Here's a couple of pictures of the chassis. I personally suspect the noise is coming from the gear train more than the motor but if anything helps it'll be worth it.

Hello thanks for posting pictures. The photo I found was different to that and there was a motor that looked like a Type 4 in it but it was fitted upright sloping down with a worm on rear axle. But your one is quite different. Probably from completely different production runs...........
Pity you don't live nearer it is hard to suggest anything when it isn't in your hands to look at close up. Sorry I dont know this loco. Hopefully somebody who does will be along later.
Only thing I can suggest is you do some research and try and find another motor which may fit. .....John

I still think its the gear train making the noise - there must be a couple more gears inside the chassis to take the longitudinal rotation to one at 90 degrees to the axles as well as the ones we can see.

and there is no way to chip it to provide sound to drown out the noise.

I’d rather have the noise than sound . Have you tried silicon based grease?

Hi David.
I also have two of these locos and tried both today.
I noticed that the chassis on them were different on each. One has a chassis like yours with two "nuts" between the wheels and pickups on the rear face of the wheels and the other has no "nuts" and pickups on the treads of the wheels.
The one like yours is fairly noisy but if it is any consolation the other is far worse !
The one like yours is in a set marked "Eggerbahn/ Jouef" and the other is from a set marked "Playcraft H0 international".
The noise is probably from the gears and layshaft between the wheels and probably difficult to fix. Another Jouef loco I have is also incredibly noisy due to the complicated gear train ( SNCF BO-BO elctric).
As far as I am aware this loco was never made with a vertical motor driving the rear wheels due to the open cab but Eggerbahn locos which were later made by Jouef had this arrangement.

Hi David just to say I made mistake saying type 4 motor (no such thing I think) should have said type 7 motor You are probably right about the gear train . I would strip it down if possible to see what can be done. As WTD say's often one of the best cures for noisy gears is lubrication. Nothing better than silicon grease. I was working on an old Hornby Castle tonight which had noisy gears and making a clicking sound. I noticed a moulding mark on one of the gears and shaved it off and that cured the clicking and grease cured the noisy gears sound, Tested it after reassembling it and just like new again. I thought it was the same sort of problem you are having with yours loco so the same treatment may work.
