Isn’t it nice to have a car to work on knowing you don’t have to get it done quickly because you need it to go to work tomorrow.

That was always the problem - back in the day I was forever stuck in the garage until the early hours of the morning with my Dad ‘fixing’ either his or my car.

It’s quite nice to get to a point where you can down tools, lock the door and walk away - exactly what I will be doing with this one shortly. I have almost finished rebuilding the hub. Slight play in the wheel bearing necessitates a swap with a good secondhand driveshaft - the bearings are almost impossible to remove, it’s said that they were not designed to be serviceable.

I’ve taken the opportunity to fit new trunnions and a new U/J (when it arrives) while it’s all disassembled and reused the brakes which were all new last year. Oh yes, and a fresh coat of paint.

I can remember being under my car at midnight in a blizzard trying to refix my exhaust in place knowing I had to be up at 5 for an early shift.

Had two weeks holiday one year, spent the first week in Kent with the girlfriend but as we drove back to my parents on the Friday, the car developed a problem with the clutch.
Saturday morning collected a new clutch, engine out, clutch changed, engine back in and then set off for the rest of our hols in South Wales by lunchtime.

I had a T reg yellow spitfire. Had to get the diff changed and it always whined after that. Great fun in summer though but a bit of a dog all round if I'm honest. Me and my girlfriend (now my wife) went on holiday to Devon in it along with 6 stick insects - but that's another story, and a rather strange one at that!

The wheel hub and suspension has all been rebuilt and put back in the car. Tested with the car in gear on axle stands. Just need the memsahib to help bleed the brakes tomorrow.
Only problem so far is the sticky red liquid leaking from the top of my head - always the same when I go back on the tools.

When the government reintroduced the rolling 40 year exemption for tax and MOT for cars in the Historic taxation class, they included another little-known change.
It used to be the case that only cars first built before 1973 were allowed to have ‘classic’ silver on black numberplates, but now any car that is eligible for the 40 year historic classification is also allowed to wear such plates.
