Weak magnet?

Quite right, gentlemen, it's not a real X-04. It's Japanese. I was just referring to the layout of the magnet, open-sided pole pieces and commutator. There is a countersunk screw passing down through the top pole piece, a rebate at the back of the magnet and the bottom pole piece and (I assume) into the chassis. There is also a little rubber mat between the motor and the chassis. Actually, Wtd, there is a small spring pressing the tops of the brushes apart, just not visible from this angle. I clearly wasn't pointing the camera right. It would seem to be a simple job to take out the magnet and replace it, just a matter of getting one of the right dimensions, otherwise it's a remag job.

If you accidently put the magnet back in the wrong way around the train will run backwards. I replaced a few magnets with my Hornby Dublo 3 rail collection a few years ago and when I ran them they ran brilliantly. However... One of my trains was not like the other (Remember Sesame Street? ). One loco ran the other way to the direction the others were running! I was puzzled at first. Checked rhe wirinh. All was normal.. Turned the magnet around and it worked fine in the right direction.

Reminds me of a school friend's Duchess of Montrose back in the 50s that ran backwards to all the other locos because the motor had been rewound for some reason and they got it back to front. It seems never to have occurred to anybody to turn the magnet round. Duh!

When my elder bother had a loco that could be taken apart he managed that but could not get it back together. I did it but it ran backwards I was only 5, 6 or 7 years old and knew nothing about R/H rule for motors etc. then and he sulked for quite a few days . Come to think about it, that was about 70 years ago.
