Looking at tht picture I can see how I was confused with the model. Take a look at the wheel splashers on the model and the splashers of a Great Western ROD locomotive.

The only common points between the ROD and the class 28xx was the wheel arrangement
1) ROD parallel boiler - 28xx tapered boiler.
2) From 2884 cabs were fitted with side windows (and other details) and the locos, strictly speaking, were known as the 2884 class
3) The large 'splasher' on the fireman's side was not a splasher - it was a stowage for the fireirons.

Many GWR tender engines had a fire iron stowage compartment on the left side.
Bears very little resemblance to the ROD.

I know the boilers are very different. Mind you, Swindon was well known for fitting their boilers to absorbed locos. Is a toolbox! It could be that was the confusion as I have not noticed this. Maybe I need something that zooms in a bit more.
