Once ballasted cork or no cork the noise will be there. John, if you look at real track it is more often that not sitting on a bed of ballast which does raise it (slightly) above ground level - so cork under, just the track, not the whole board, can help to achieve the impression of the "shoulder" once ballasted. Thanks Barry, very interesting. To me spending €150, on cork, could be better used on summat else.
