Re: Baseboard height
5ft 9. Mine is 3ft. Nice height to work on. Really depends on what you want. Are you storing things under it. Some on here have kitchen cabinets underneath. Your choice, up to you.

I have two, one at 3’ the other 4’6”. Both work, prefer the view of the higher one.

Re: Baseboard height
Steve is right. The higher the better. Most layouts are viewed from a helicopter instead of ground level.

Re: Baseboard height
Thanks fellas,
I’m about to embark on modelling GWR Severn Tunnel Junction circa 60s... including sheds, shunting hump but not marshalling yards!..finally making a start.
Struggling to find detailed track layout but have a schematic. Quite a bit of work envisaged so I really need to get the working height comfortable from the start.

Re: Baseboard height
Not just the right height. More important is the width. 3 ft in the very maximum you want to reach. Anything wider and you’ll destroy anything at the front of the layout with your body. 2ft 6 is about right.

Re: Baseboard height
Mine was the height that meant I could get 4 legs cut from each length of timber I had bought, with no waste.
Re: Baseboard height
I’m using IKEA metal post legs 75cm adjustable height, same as my dining table height, plus 15 cm baseboard frame depth plus 1.2 cm boards = 90+cm same height as my kitchen worktops.

Re: Baseboard height
I sat on a chair and made the height of the layout to be higher then my legs. Once saw a layout which was about 6ft off the ground, and it was operated from the front and when the operators head followed the train, no one watching could see it. A bit of a wasted opportunity as an exhibition layout goes. Eye level when standing up may seem an idea, but practically speaking, it is not.
I also once toyed with the idea of a ground level layout where it could be viewed as if one is looking from the top of a mountain towards the valley below. The problem is, to get the desired effect will take a lot of space. Space which means a lot of work and a lot to transport etc... Also vunerable to people falling on the layout... Mind you. Too tall and layouts can be unstable.

Re: Baseboard height
Mine are thirty nine inches ( a metre) - this enabled me, as was mentioned by WTD, to fit kitchen base units (with legs) under the boards. I say with legs as this allows me to slide storage boxes (Hobbycraft) under the units. In some areas I have used wall units, which are shallower, depth wise. It pays to have most of your wiring done before putting units in place, but as they don't have tops fitted, and additional wiring can be done, through the cupboard, without to much hassle.
