CLASS 71 REPAINT

My next project will be a repaint (and a couple of small repairs) to a Hornby class 71 for a friend.
At this stage, I’m just collecting the materials together - replacement transfers from Fox and Railmatch paint.

No. It will stay green. The factory finish has been damaged so it's a restoration.

Made a small start this morning. Started off by taking pictures from all sides (and top) or reference.
I have also started to remove all the handrails and additional detail and now you can start to see the damaged paintwork.
I will have to work out how to get the interior mouldings and glass out to save a lot of effort when it comes to masking.

Stripdown completed - that’s a lot of very small fiddly bits to refit if I can remember where they go.

Yep, inside and out.

I finished dismantling all the detail from the shell yesterday, helped by Hornby using a flexible glue, almost like Copydex, holding the glazing in place. A couple of the plastic door handrails are missing so they will all be replaced by wire - drilled out the mounting holes.

Cleaned up some excess glue around the moulded brackets on the sides - I was expecting mounting holes for nameboards and was ready to fill them if required.

Mounted the washed and degreased body shell on a length of dowel ready for primer only to find that I’ve run out of grey primer. Sort that out tomorrow so the primer coat will have at least a week to dry before I go anywhere near it with masking tape.

A light coat of primer this morning - already looking better.
The eagle-eyed May have noticed that I didn’t remove the old numbers, crests or lining and yes, they do show as slightly raised under the primer - quite deliberate as they will act as reference points when the new transfers go on.
