NYMR autumn steam gala 2019

#1

Post by Steve M »

I’ll start my thread early as the NYMR has announced this year’s guest locos as King Edward II, Witherslack Hall and Union of South Africa.
Already booked our holiday to coincide with the gala, just hope the weather is ok.

Towards the end of steam, BR organised a railtour in Scotland. So heavily booked it was something like 18 coaches, plus a Black Five, that Union of South Africa had to drag around :P

Woke this morning to rain of biblical proportions!
But being hardy Brits, we drove over to Pickering (where it was still raining) and caught the train to Whitby - where the sun was shining. :D

On the way back I managed this quick clip of the doubleheader through the Grosmont tunnel and past the MPD to give a taste of what the gala will have to offer this weekend.

The weather yesterday meant that we delayed our visit until today - never again!
Very large crowds meant it was very difficult to move around, never mind get decent shots of the locos. It was actually easier to prop up the mobile phone and shoot video.

I think the organisers made a big mistake though, with three visiting headline engines they seemed to favour putting other locos in front and double heading them - stopped anyone getting clear shots of the ‘headline acts’.

Very, very wet today - hadn’t planned to visit the gala today but we (I) decided it was the best place to get lunch after spending all morning watching the rain from our holiday cottage.

Treated to a Southern double header working hard up the bank at Goathland. Also explored a new (for me) photo location at Darnholme - pics of the A4 to come eventually.

And the bad news is that the rain may have got to my camera - when I can get to the shops I’ll try immersing it in a bag of rice for a few days.

Hi Steve
Had the same thing when I went to the Gloucester/Warks with WTD. Should have known better - go out with him and it always rains.
My household contents insurance paid up very quickly.

Not a fan of Nikon, Brian.
Hope it doesn’t come to repair or replacement - Canon 5D mkII - ain’t gonna be cheap.

Like PP said the house insurance should cover it.
