How much weigh to add to locos and stock.

Evening gents.

Ive been away from the forum for a while, me and my son have been just playing trains and having fun, but no building has been going on. He's now 3 and he's really getting the hang of operating his simple layout. Along with that has come his insistence than he decides what we run, which sometimes means he wants a 'super train'. We'll get as much as out stock as we can and couple it to one of his locos. We bought a clas 08 train pack in our local model rail shop on the weeked from his birthday money, which he has christened 'Diesel', and after 5 minutes of watching it go round declared "Diesel super train". Fair play to the little thing it would pull a fair rake of hornby 4 wheel open wagons, but it would need careful power control or in would just wheel spin. As an experiment I taped a load of big washers I had hanging around to its roof and all of a sudden I'd would pull everybit of rolling stock we had. How much is usually recommended for safe reliable running? We've got a couple of little 0-4-0 that would really benefit from a little extra weight so I was going to get hold of some carv wheel balancing weight. Some of our little 4 wheel coaches and wagons can be a bit temperamental over points so was thinking of adding some to them aswell, but don't want to over do it.

Any pointers would be great, and sorry for the long rambling, once I started yapping I could n TBTTV1P2 stop. :)

It is a difficult one to work out. One can add more and more weight to the locomotive until it can pull almoat anything without even wheelspinning, but wheelspinning does allow some give so there is less strain on the gears. So the best idea is to add weight, but refrain from reaching the point where the loco just stalls without spinning its wheels if the loads are too heavy.
