Bit of a rethink on the theme of the layout and have decided I am going to sell all my current diesel stock and instead model based on mid to late 60's steam. If anyone is interested in purchasing some stock from me, let me know. All locos are DCC and most with sound.

All have been serviced with wheel cleaning in the last 10 months or so.

All diesel locos and DMU's now sold except one Class 33 which I decided to keep as it sounds too good to part with !

Onwards now to buy some steam locos :)

Does anyone have any knowledge, or experience of Oxford rail DCC locos ? I normally buy Bachmann but the Oxford rail ones are appearing more and more frequently these days. Are they any good I wonder, especially ones with sound chips.

Can’t comment on their sound fitted locos but I do have two (possibly three :D ) DCC ready which I have fitted decoders to myself.
Lovely models that, in my experience run well, but I did have one issue with their Dean Goods which had a dodgy solder joint on the motor that caused an intermittent short - an absolute bu##er to find.
Apart from that, very happy with them.

Thank you. I think for the moment, I will stick with Bachmann.

So far, I've bought 4 steam locos with sound and a BR Green Class 25 with sound so we'll see how we get on.

I am going to quote myself from December 2018:

Over the months I have come to the conclusion that buying 2nd hand models (DCC sound) is probably not worth it.

At the moment, the Class 33, one of the Class 66's and the latest Class 47 are off the layout and need repairs. The Class 33 went straight to the guy who repairs my models for me soon after I bought it and when I got it back, it ran for about 10 minutes then the motor started to make a whining sound, so it's back in the box awaiting further work.

The Class 66 runs and has great sound, lights work etc but after about 2 circuits of the layout it just dies. If I power off the layout and on again, the 66 runs again - then dies.

The Class 47 arrived last Friday. I worked out the address is 365 (no clues in the box) and although the sound is great, likes work etc it won't move. I contacted the guy who sold it to me and he replied asking "have you cleaned the pick ups". Now when someone advertises a model that "is very lightly used", I would have assumed that it would run but run it will not. So now that too has to go to the repair guy too.

So by the time I add the postage and repair costs over the months, I probably would have been better off buying new.

New Years resolution. Invest in brand new models only


Well, I invested last week in a brand new Bachmann ROBINSON CLASS J11 (GCR 9J) 64377 BR EARLY EMBLEM DCC SOUND & WEATHERED.

Cost, £189.00 including postage.

After 4 circuits of the layout, it no longer works - dead as the proverbial DoDo :twisted: Now I have to return it to the shop for a replacement.

Other locos work fine so it's not the track/power causing this problem - I think....

At least with new, you can return them to the shop - not always the case with pre-owned.

Here we go again. I bought a BACHMANN OO GAUGE, 31-884 CLASS 4F 0-6-0 locomotive. Runs and sounds really good except when it gets to a 1st radius curve. It derails every time on that curve.

The very nice people at Rails of Sheffield suggested to loosen a screw on the bogie but as there is no bogie, there is no screw.

Has anyone encountered this problem with this or similar locos on these curves ?

Interestingly, the duff loco mentioned recently that has gone back to the shop after it died, has gone back to Rails of Sheffield. I'm not blaming them in anyway but now I have 2 locos bought from them that are effectively useless on my layout and with over £300.00 spent, I'm not best pleased.

1st rad track is always going to be a problem with tender locos. It is probably the tender touching the loco. Is the draw bar joining the tender to the loco at its full extent. There is usually two holes at the tender end.

Unless you really have to have them, avoid 1st rad. Only suitable for short locos.
