Yes, i agree. I have spoiled a few modes with the " i will just give it a little more weathering" approach and regretted it afterwards.

I dont think they used felt back in the late 1800s, my vague memory remembers it cover in pitch/tar i think.

Most probably Coal Tar and pitch, Brian.
