Thanks Brian for the advice, I will only ever be running DC so I think removal of the chip will be the way to go.
I'm away from home at the moment so I will post a note re the catalogue number of the Grange once I get back. Incidentally when I took the loco out of its box it didn't look like it had ever been removed before!
