Iphone speakers

#1

Post by Forfarian »

Hi Guys
Has anyone gone down the road of fitting I phone speakers to sound decoders?
There seems to be quite a bit of discussion over in the dark side re the pros and cons, so i was just wondering if anyone on here had tried using them.
At the moment I have sugar cube speakers on all my locos, but there seems to be opinions that the I Ph speakers give a better sound, specially when fitted to Class 37s.
I would appreciate any help on Ohms and wattage required.

Go over to RM Web DCC Sound forum and look on Richard Crofts page where he has videos of all sorts of speakers in a test rig for you to listen to.

There is also much discussion of iphone and other types of speakers relative to suitability for use in various models.

I fitted an I-phone speaker to the TTS decoders on my Class 31 and 37, and it definitely was an improvement over the standard speaker that is supplied....... I also tried sugar cubes but fitting under the fan grill, I felt I was able to direct the sound output better from the outlet on the I-phone speaker to project out of the grill, whilst still being able to fit the loco body back on okay due to the slimness of the speaker........ for the money it made TTS very acceptable for me.

Hope this helps

A lot was made of the Sutton Loco Works Class 24 being fitted with I-phone speakers - it is supposed to be the best sounding ready to run loco you can buy (£300).

I have a SLW Class 24 and for sure it is the best sounding RTR I have heard, but definitely does not have I-phone speakers fitted, but rather 2-off sugercube types....... the sound quality is amazing but a tad too loud for one’s garage...... I guess this can be tweaked but haven’t got around to this yet.

I can’t help thinking that iPhone speakers are designed for, and work best in iPhones. And presume that sugar cubes are selected and fitted in housings to suit modellers.
Just sayin’.

Our local model shop fits i-phone speakers into sound locos without any issues. They believe the sound to be better than others out there. Not heard ir tried one myself mind.

I think the best place for any speaker is not in an OO steam loco.
