Norton 360 VPN

Recently I bought a secondhand nerly new lap top.It had a free virus program so I bought a Norton Virus and VPN for it. The Norton VPN is often closing down for no reason leaving you wide open on the net and sometimes the virus closes also leaving you with no protection at all.
Has anyone else had problems like this with Norton programs. There must be better than Norton on offer. Any idears.

Hi, Norton have a free chat line. I have used it many times. If they cant fix it in the chat, they remotely take over your machine, while you watch, and sort it. All free. I would try this. John

I use Mcafee as it is free with BT broadband. Seems to work very well. I dare say somebody will say it is useless.

Yes I think the chat line sounds the best way forward. I have reinstalled it several times but not fixed it so far. Will give the chat line a go.
As for Mcafee. I used it for years OK.
One thing I think is good idea is Malwarebytes. Use it in adition to what ever else you use. Even the free version finds things that the others miss completely. But Malware bytes do not do a VPN.

Malwarebytes is very good but you need to run an AV program alongside. I use it with free version of Avast.

If the laptop is Windows 10 don't panic. Windows Defender on Win10 is very very good and will keep you protected in the short term whilst you sort the problem provided the laptop is patched up to date.
Kaspersky is a good AV although I know a lot of people slate it because it's a Russian product. Most AV programs do offer a free version so you could try some and get a feel for them before committing to buy.
As advised though if the Norton is a legit copy try the chat first, but make sure it is Norton you are talking to.
As for the VPN part I don't use one so couldn't comment.

This has been a very useful thread to me as I still use W7 on my desktop. After all the warnings about security issues when M/soft stopped supporting it with security updates I got Malware Bytes - having used the free version a few times before. I also took note of what TWD said:-

"Malwarebytes is very good but you need to run an AV program alongside. I use it with free version of Avast".

Having downloaded it I found all my short cuts had changed to google! I use duckduckgo and browser Brave.
A trip to control panel was necessary to undelete Chrome which had installed itself and made itself the default browser!

Yeah sorry, you have to uncheck the "Install Chrome" tick box during installation.

chat line, is excellent. I pay a yearly sub, and on renewal, they start at 60 euros. I then go on chat line, and haggle. Just agreed 34 euros for this year, with coverage of 6 machines. Over the last 15 years i have let them take over my machine, similar to Railmaster. You can watch everything they do, so very safe. Each time they have sorted prob, in about 4 minutes. Tis a good system, i think.
