Restoring Peco point latching

#1

Post by Richard »

When I initially laid the first layout I removed the latching spring from the Peco points as I was using Cobalt point motors. Now I’m rebuilding I want to use the Cobalt motors elsewhere and need to return the Peco points to self latching so that I can use Peco point motors I already have.

Remixing the spring is extremely fiddly, I’ve managed on where I had the necessary bits. However the various Peco points seem to have differing designs for the latching mechanism. Is there a more simple way of returning a latching function to the points (external latching perhaps in some way)? Replacing a dozen or so Peco points with the self latching GMC PM4 motors is going to be quite costly.
Thanks

Plus I can’t use the PL12 Motor adaptor plate(which has an over-centre spring) because the PL10 point motors have already had their operating pins shortened when previously installed which are now too short to reach the underside of the point. I don’t see whether or how the operating pin might be lengthened.

What a tale of woe!

I can't help with the springs but the pins can be lengthened by getting a piece of brass tube where the inside diameter matches the thickness of the old pin. Cut a 1cm length from the brass to act as a collar. Then get a length of steel rod (piano wire) the same thickness as the old pin and slide it in the top of the collar and onto the old pin. The faintest hint of superglue applied with a pin or similar will hold it all in place.

Seep PM4 have a built in mechanical latch and a change-over contact too. But they do take more effort and care when installing to ensure they are 100% in line and central to the point above. Plus as you say cost will be major factor if they are all replaced!

As Steve states the PM10 or a SEEPs drive pin can be extended by a new pin of roughly the same diameter and a short length of brass tube super glued or epoxy bonded to secure it to both pins. I've used suitable length and dia. panel pins in the past with the head cut off.

Peco Technical Bureau will supply (Usually Free?) replacement over centre springs for their points. You just need to contact them by post and include a Stamped addressed return envelope. They are supplied with nice long ends which aid simple fitting and then you will need to cut off the surplus ends flush with the point. Don't forget to tell them how many points you need to fit new springs onto, as they will otherwise only send four of five new springs.
