Steve, to me thats a coach screw. Interesting. I would certainly attempt the glue fix, before paying for a chippie, who will not be able to come till about july, based on isolation

They go by either name John. My father would always use the term lag bolt so that must have stuck in the memory. Maybe a regional term, boulon de l'entraîneur in your neck of the woods?

In Sandy’s situation I’d recommend pre-drilling a hole and using a large flat washer with each bolt to spread the load when tightening up with a suitable socket. A couple of 5” bolts should do assuming it’s a 2” joist and a 4” newel - if smaller than that drop to a 4” bolt. The hardest part of the job would be getting access in the first place and having enough space between the joists to get a drill in.

Thanks all you chaps for your advice. I will get it fixed later when things get better. It is only slightly loose at the moment. Not flopping around. I like to nip things in the bud normally but this time I will leave it to an expert later in year when things settle down.
Will get on with fitting my loft ladder now which has been waiting a month to be done. Even I can do that. It is all in a kit.

WTD, when i first moved to lancaster, i ran the RAAB KARCHER, shop. They were big timber merchants. They called them coach screws, and coach bolts. That was where my massive supply of screws and bolts came from. Staff discount was very very generous, so i stocked up. That was in 1989, and still today, have large supply. I sold a big Bosch Drill, to a joiner, who returned it for refund 2 weeks later. MD, said any use to you for €20 . Still using today.

We have a hardware shop near us where you can buy one of anything. They have containers full of washers, bolts, split pins.........etc, etc,. I’m like a kid in a sweet shop when I go there.

I bought some specialist glue in Cyprus.

It expands and foams slightly as it sets and according to the container it is waterproof including sea water.

I bought it as a thin film adhesive to refix outdoor patio tiles that had lifted due to acid rain destroying the Cypriot excuse for normal cement based tile bedding. It was very effective and the tiles never lifted again.

I am sure you could find similar foaming adhesives in UK maybe by 3Ms or Gorilla.
