Hello from Nottingham

#1

Post by MartinS »

New to here .. so hello to all.
No layout at present, have to get the RTR stuff down from the loft that we had when the kids were young.
Always been interested in signalling, and where the trains are on the layout, and RFID seems a good solution.
Can't find any topics on RFID, so looking for people who have experience on this.

Welcome to the Forum.

RFID just hasnt taken off as first thought. Not sure why?
Hornby were looking at it, but then seemed to have dropped it. There are AFIK no commercial RFID units made for model railway use? MERG have dabbled, but nothing constructive AFAIK?

Brian,
Well, there are commercial units for model railway use .. CTI do one, as do MRCS in the US, and there's also traintraxx. The trouble is they all seem very expensive, especially if one is wanting to do train detection at many points in a layout. Is it a chicken and egg situation? I think in the US they do a lot more shunting operations.
