Stiff card

I need to make a fence. I’m using card because cutting small pieces of thin wood was a pain last time. Anyone know a method for making card stiff ie more durable? I’ve heard of shellac but it seems expensive and quite hard to get hold of. A simple and cheap method is what I need. Any suggestions please?

On an off cut of card, try brushing on dilute PVA/Water mixed to 50/50 and allow it to fully dry then test.
