Runaway train........a big one

In the paper today about an iron ore train in Australia travelled more than 90km without a driver at over 100km per hour. It had four locos and 268 wagons. It is suggested it may have had a load of 35,000 tonnes of ore.

Saw that. Somehow deliberately, and remotely, derailed after 50 minutes. R-

Driver obviously forgot to put the handbrake on before he got out to check the problem …

The train was deliberately derailed as that was the only way they could stop it.

Yes the detailment was orchestrated at the Perth control centre.

My own experience with runaway/unstoppable trains, the first one, come down the incline from Nunhead to St Johns Flyover, came to a stand at the signal at the bottom of the incline, applied the loco brake and released the train brake, signal phone started to ring, got off the loco and a couple yards to the signal, bit of groaning and grinding turn round and the train is moving towards me and ultimately Lewisham station, desperate times require desperate measures, so walk in front of the train and open the train pipe cock, this applied all the brakes and stopped the train, lesson learnt on inclines with 1500 ton trains leave the train brake on.....how any body can jump in front of one is well beyond me after that....as for the reason for this thread, i don't have a clue how or why it happened....

On the ABC Facebook page they have the result. Complete destruction. The loco was completely buried in iron ore

We’ve seen some film of the wreckage. Now they can sell scrap metal along with the iron ore.
