brian1951 wrote: Sat Oct 03, 2020 11:54 am Well done indeed, you will get there in the end. ( well thats what i keep telling myself ;) The thread on your build will be nice to see. Regards Brian 1951.
Thanks Brian. What I really love about this hobby, apart from my love of the "real" thing from my boyhood days, is the different aspects and skills required. One day I might be laying track, another day building a plastic kit or yet another day building and testing electronics or programming a microprocessor. About the only skill I seem to have lost over the decades is my woodworking skills, and to think I got a prize at school for that! Hence why I started this thread to see how others have got round the problem by the use of pre built units or kits.

Good luck with your new layout, you seem to be making good progress.

i must admit that hell would have to freeze over, before i even considered buying a ready made baseboard. Probably has a lot to do with the space i have, and the size of my workshop. I would consider, copying their designs, should the need arise, but, to my mind, building a baseboard, as Brian, has just proved, for his N Gauge, layout, is a fairly basic woodworking concept. Where you guys score, is the servicing/ mending of your locos/ fitting decoders, ballasting, making scenery, etc. I have never had the courage, to attempt that, (decoder fitting), that is, whilst i would think nothing about building baseboards. Each to there own, as my dad, would have said.. I am quite happy, to strip down and magnetize, a 3 rail loco, presumably, cos i cut my teeth, on 3 rail. I have a current problem with the valve assembly, coming loose on my Beyer Garratt, pins coming out of wheels, and it has sat on my bench, for weeks, while i pluck up courage, to attempt a fix. Shame i could not make a baseboard, in exchange for this repair.

Your doing a good job Terry. I recall with the MRS baseboards, being computerised machine cut(not sure laser cutting was around in 2013?), the joints (slots) were a very tight fit. As everything was pre-drilled and countersunk, it was a case of spreading the PVA, but with the screws already partly in place, and then dashing around with the drill-driver. As the tops were pre-drilled I found no need for weights on top, as the boards were built on a perfectly flat surface the weight of the whole structure kept it flat. Barry
