Carnforth Station

Post by tigger449 »

Whilst browsing through some prototype station plans the other day, I wondered if anyone had attempted modelling Carnforth station, as used in the film Brief Encounter. I couldn't find any evidence online, although it does look like an interesting area to model, with three separate rail companies operating in the pre-nationalisation era and extensive goods sidings. Has anyone tried it?

Looks quite interesting. They filmed it there because there wasn't a blackout according to Wiki.

I would imagine that the space required would make it beyond the scope of most individual modellers. Maybe a club could take it on, but even then it would require quite a lot of compression.

The idea of finding a location that was served by more than one company is interesting though.

Carnforth also has a lot of modelling potential in its more modern guise. As the main operating base for West Coast Railways, the former MPD (occupying the site of the goods sidings as shown) gives potential for modelling of pretty much anything from a 1940s steam shed (including examples of just about anything earlier too) right through to entirely modern image, with anything in between thrown in, or in fact any mixture at all. The Furness Railway signalbox which remains in-situ is of particular historical interest, as is the current Carnforth Station Junction box (famous now, of course, for being at one end of the longest AB signalling section in the UK). The up and down lines of the WCML could be represented with or without the OHLE. If I had the space it would be definitely something I'd be considering for a long term project!
