Hornby R759/R859 Loco & Tender Maintenance

#1

Post by MJC01 »

I entered the world of Model Railway some 6 months or so ago and along the way I have built a small layout, bought/acquired a few Locos and gained a little bit of knowledge. A problem I have is that my little bit of knowledge is not proving sufficient to resolve an issue when running the Loco & Tender drive unit. The Tender more or less 'wobbles' itself around the curves and straights causing significantly less than smooth running. I suspected the issue might be with the wheels and using service sheets 86, 98 & 98A for guidance I have changed wheels and axles but alas the problem remains. Does anyone know where I might be able to send this combo for a 'health check' - a sort of mail order repair shop?

00Bill on Youtube takes in 'repairs' to video. One of his recent videos (the APT power car video) had an email address to contact him (I'll not post it here in case it breaks the rules of the forum) to discuss if he was interested (and at what price) in looking at a loco. He does steam and diesel so could be worth looking at. Many model shops also offer repairs, although they are also currently quite fully booked in many cases. Try your local model shop or do a Google search for one that offers the service.

00Bill is a great channel, click his user name and you will get to his email address from the 'About' tab.
He has said many time he doesn't charge as he love fixing them & he has done a Black 5, (he may for replacement parts), worth a shot as IanS says.

I didn't know you could find email addresses in the about section - I've viewed YouTube for a lot of years, I just never looked in 'About' :geek:

Hi All, I reached out to OOBill and he very kindly agreed that I send the Black 5 to him. I now have it back fully serviced and from my perspective it is running like a dream on my layout. Bill posted a video of his work on Youtube under "Hornby R859 Black 5: Repair Request"

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nGJm4Smeofk&t=53s

I made an offer of payment for his time, efforts and expertise plus any materials used. Bill modestly explained that he has never set out to take or has expectations to receive payments but after I more or less insisted he said that any donations to https://www.buymeacoffee.com/00bill would be gratefully received.

I did make a donation and this experience was well worth every penny.

p.s. I posted this with Bill's agreement

Watched the video. If only the majority of the other similar videos were as good as his.
