Make yourself a brew and sit and watch 15 mins of the late great Fred Dibnah at work.

Most people are shocked when they find out how bad I am as an electrician

Gives me vertigo just watching him ...

I was OK until he climbed the bit with the overhang. They don’t make blokes like that any more.

I used to laugh when he scarpered out of the way of a drop that wasn’t quite where he planned it and said ‘Did you like that’. Incredible man, replaced in part by Guy Martin, who was poured from a similar mould.

I just watched one of many videos of him - just like the Americans building skyscrapers years ago, little or no safety gear.

Turn the film 90 degrees. A piece of cake then.
Seriously; I was dizzy two rungs up. I cannot stand heights at all.

The first proper telegraph pole I climbed, not including the 6ft ones at Bletchley, was about 50ft tall in Datchet, Bucks.
When I got to the top steps the engineer who was training me was already belted up at the top. He said don’t worry about the height just lean back on your safety belt you’ll be fine. What I didn’t know was the he had one finger between my belt and the pole. When he removed it I moved backwards about half an inch. Won’t tell you what I called him but we did become good mates.

In my early working days, I climbed up a microwave tower at least 100 plus feet with no problems but found it harder coming down... trying not to slip.
