I probably overthought or overengineered the idea. :?
My suggestion around the washers and 'long'tube was to create a flanged tube with the tube fitting inside the hole in the washer. The washer would then act as a thrust bearing to spread the load and allow the tubes to move freely inside one another.
You occasionally see similar setups in older cars for some of the suspension links.

A very rough sketch:
Red is the threaded rod
Green - washers
Blue - long inner tube
Black - short outer tube
Yellow - each side of the wooden hinge plate

Over engineered but an elegant solution. (Possibly).

That is a good solution Steve. I fully understand your diagram. I wasn't sure whether I would get washers (commercially) that would go over the tubes, or I would have to try and enlarge the hole. Whichever way, I like the idea. Many thanks . Barry

No tubes of the correct size in Wickes. The current repair of a 12mm bolt, instead of the 10, is working for the time being.

He looks like he's fond of a Kit-Kat (or 3)!

That shot has to be one of the best model railway images I've ever seen. Congratulations on your suburb skill. :D

Thanks for all the comments. It is very difficult to emphasize the detail in something so small. I think they could be better.

These are awaiting the paintbrush. I have noted that some of my "matt" colours, despite a very good stir, are coming out with a sheen finish when dry. I primed the figures using Humbrol Acrylic primer - I have used Halfords white in the past before painting. I don't think that is the problem - may be I need to stir a bit more?

Definitely needs more stirring. Expo(I think) do a small electric one - looks like a small milk whisk.
