I’m searching for advice regarding what dcc sound decoders to use on two particular locos.
I’ve been putting together a smallish layout for my grandchildren. All is ready except I need to set up a couple of locos with dcc sound. I have a railroad Flying Scotsman and Bachman Class 40, both are dcc ready. My local model shop sold me a TTS decoder for the FS but is actually for A4 loco because the correct one was out of stock. And I can’t find one anywhere for the Class 40 under £115.
My main question - is the sound from the Hornby TTS decoders so noticeably different (obviously steam or Diesel) - does the A4 sound so different to that of the FS? Also can anyone recommend a sound decoder for my Class 40 that is reasonably priced.
The layout is set up with everything else I need so if anyone could offer any suggestions it would really be appreciated. I’ve returned to the world of model railways for the first time since my childhood and so I’m so keen to learn more!
Many thanks,
ColinM
What DCC decoder?
Re: What DCC decoder?
Hi Colin,
Hornby do a Class 40 TTS sound decoder (R8119) which is very acceptable for the money, especially if you fitted an upgraded speaker........I have one fitted to one of my Class 40's and it nicely replicates the "whistling" sound this class was famous for when running at low speed.
You should be able to find one of these TTS decoder if you trawl the web or ebay etc.
Hope this helps - Richard.

Re: What DCC decoder?
I've the Hornby class 40 TTS Decoder in my Bachmann Class 40 along with a Rail Exclusive Baby Boomer speaker and they work well together. I need one for my other Class 40, but at the moment they are like rocking horse do-do! I can't find the TTS anywhere (at a decent price that is).
And the Lord said unto John “Come forth and receive eternal life”, but John came fifth and won a toaster!
Re: What DCC decoder?
As a heavy user of decoders and sound decoders I have found that on regular occasions certain decoders including TTS sound seem to sell out and then the panic sets in of not having that decoder available.
6 months ago I couldn't get a TTS Black 5 & Princess decoders anywhere and was told by a retailer that I would never get them again, strange because there are plenty now.
Keep checking and do a thorough google search, also keep an eye on Amazon and Fleabay as they will come up for sale, though not sure what you want to pay but a TTS should be sub 60 quid, don't spend over that as you may as well get a SWD (South West Digital) one, however this obviously depends on your available funds.

Re: What DCC decoder?
TTS retail at £45 tops, and can be found on discount from shops like Great Eastern Models, Norwich.
