N Gauge Newbie

Hi,
I'm Nige from Wolverhampton, 69 coming up to 70 next month and still a big kid

I haven't had a model railway since I was about 12 and I think it was a Tri-ang 00 set. But since then I've been into similar hobbies such as slot car racing and most of the other hobbies, RC Boating, RC Planes and Helicopters and also RC Cars.
I wanted a railway a while ago and since then a few weeks ago I took the plunge and bought a used Graham Farish set in N Gauge, purely because I don't have much room in this house we bought when returning from living in Spain for 10 years, I can manage to fit in a 4 x 2 baseboard and before I build it I'm accumulating extra track, locos, rolling stock etc. I built a baseboard from 9mm OSB and strengthened it with 2" x 1" timber underneath.
I might have to play with it though as, although it was perfectly flat when I glued and screwed it together, today I noticed an upward warp of about half and inch in the middle, so I've clamped it flat to a thick flat MDF table workbench and am sealing the whole thing as I type. I realise it's not the best material to use but if it comes to it, I'll screw it down to the workbench if my efforts fail

Remember, there's no such thing as a silly question, only a question you don't know the answer too. I'd advise looking through the forum first though as many questions have already been asked and fully answered!

You seem well on the way to having a great layout.

I have used 11mm thick OSB braced underneath on framework spaced around 300mm apart, which so far has proved very stable.

Best of luck with your layout, I'm in a similar boat myself, re. coming back after fifty odd years although I' in OO gauge. Fun isn't it!

Welcome to the forum from a fellow N gauge modeller. I took the easy route and got someone else to build the baseboards. I still managed to make a bit of a mess of the joins though when putting it together. Got lazy/in a hurry and now the back third slopes and has a large gap that had to be filled in. Too late to do anything about it now though as it was all assembled about a year ago and now has a lot of track and scenery on it. Trains don't seem to mind although it does mean they accelerate heading into one of my 180 degree curves which is a bit scary
