Started building new lay out

#1

Post by footplate1947 »

At last made start with the new layout. Have decided to use 1000 mm Kitchen base units to support the base boards. Have got 3 in position and need 2 more. They are B&Q standard units and are £35 each but I think the main advantage is all the storage you end up with instead of putting stuff on the floor under. I like the units and they seem to be solid enough at very good price and easy to assemble but my arm aches now after all that screwing. I always use wood glue on the dowels makes for better job.
Next job will be to cut all my old boards to fit the new room and see if any changes have to be made. May end up making new ones if altering the old ones does not work out. Have not done any pictures yet buy will start when the base units are in place. Will be posting some photos soon.

A good idea John. I used boards built from basically a kit, but the length of the legs gave me room to put B&Q base unit under the boards. I didn't bother with a top for the units, as this allows me to have (fairly!) easy access to the wiring. I was also able to use the legs on the base units, which allows for shallow storage units (boxes) from Hobby Craft to slide underneath. I even put the cheapest doors on the units. I have also used B&Q wall units (they are not so deep) for under board storage. As you say for £35 each they are a good deal. Look forward to seeing how you get on. BB

Thanks chaps for the kind words. It is nice to get going with the layout at last. Mind you not looking forward to next spring as the garden is in a state and will need a lot of work to get it sorted out. Think may be, slab it may be good idea, have asked builder for a quote. :)

Rest of my base units delivered today along with some cheap[ slab doors and most of them assembled now and in next couple of days will be levelling cupboards and getting ready to fit the boards on top. Once I get the bases in place will start to do a My lay out in the right section and will start taking a record of pictures to show progress. I have been looking forward to this for ages. :D

Hi John, good luck with the layout but please, please don't slab the garden as this is destroying our wildlife and adding to global warming. Instead spend the money on a local gardener who is wildlife friendly, i.e. one who will do minimum tidying whilst helping our local wildlife and saving you the hard labour. Money much better spent in my opinion.

Think it depends on circumstances. Lots of places around here, not us, have slabbed over their front gardens, no choice, they need to for parking. We have a huge amount of wildlife from deer to field mice. :)

Interestingly our estate was one of if not the first in the 60's to be designed around the trees. If there was a tree they left it there and missed out a couple of houses.

I dont think putting down a few slabs in our small back yard (one reasons we liked the place) will make one iota of difference because we live in the country with views all around and other than a few farm buildings all we can see for miles is open countryside mostly growing crops and woodlands.. We can see one or two lit windows at nigh in the distance. So I don't think we shall be upsetting the wildlife at all. ....John

Hi John
Sounds like a nice project with the kitchen base units being the baseboard support. Don't forget before fitting any top to cut some slots in the cupboard top edges to allow any wiring to pass from cupboard to cupboard, once the baseboard top is fixed down. :D
