Started the work on the Castle today. I was interrupted by the police who wanted me to get some cctv from work (adding to my running total of 16 arrests in 3 months), but I was able to strip the handrails and a few other ancillaries.
I’ve replaced the cab handrails as one was broken and applied some filler to the smokebox to get rid of an unwanted mounting hole.
I also did a test spray of the green over both a grey and a white primer to see which gave the best result - it was the grey in this case.

One challenge that has shown up isn’t that I suspect that at some time in its life, the original loco got a bit close to some silicone based polish. Even though I gave it a good soapy wash before starting, one side of the loco and tender (presumably the exposed side) shows a little contamination after priming.
This can sit for at least 24 hours to fully dry then hopefully some very fine wet and dry sanding will take care of that before an extra coat of primer is applied.

Only from time to time Sandy. Occupational hazard!
The good news is that the sanded areas are now drying nicely under their new coat of primer.
The weather is a bit damp at the moment but hopefully the humidity will improve to allow me to start on the colour.

As usual I’m creeping up on this one. The main block colours are complete but need to harden off before getting a coat of gloss varnish ready to take the transfers and there are a lot of those - it’s only when you get into a job like this that you realise just how complex some of the liveries were.

I saw this mentioned in a magazine recently and thought I’d give it a try.
I stuck a piece of masking tape across the side of an old model to test it with the supplied aluminium oxide blast media. It’s a little too sharp but I have ordered a bag of extremely fine glass beads which is recommended for use on plastics.
Does a pretty good job of stripping painted logos without damaging the plastic underneath.
I will need to experiment a lot more before I try it on a client’s loco though.
