Thanks everyone! What a big, friendly welcome!
Well, you've already given me plenty of thought between you. My plan had been to cobble together much of the fixed layout from track that came with the (sigh) three train sets that I now possess. But I can see a lot of advantage in putting that collection of track aside and buying new stuff to create the layout.
I don't want to clutter your Welcome Room with more of my newbie problems. I'll hold my other questions back for now, and I can pose them at a more appropriate time in a more appropriate thread.

Why not do a little of both as one can mix sectional track with flexible track as long as the flexible track is code 100. You can have the best of both worlds.
