Hello from Gloucester

Hello everyone,

I am a complete newbie to this. My neighbour has a set in his attic which is very big and impressive. He's suggested I start my own set and we have a spare room which I will use. I'm in the UK so it's size N scale, I didn't realise there was more than one.

Hope to lean some stuff from this forum. Happy to make new friends too.

Good morming and welcome to a friendly forum. what scale you use will depend on the size of the room and your layout plan you need to fit in the room. if the room is small then N may well be a good choice. 00 gauge is the next scale up in British modelling. I prefer OO as I am getting on and my eyes are not what they were. N is bit fiddley for me. But you can fit a lot more railway into a small space. So the first question is what is the size of your room.

A couple of years ago I changed from OO to O gauge, the next size up and my layout is in a small 8x8ft room. Just depends on what you want to run. Look forward to seeing your progress.

Welcome Christine. Four scales you might consider - N, 009, 00 and 0 each with their own merits. Take some time to decide, do some reading and visit some exhibitions to get a ‘feel’ for each one. As said previously, OO is the best represented with manufacturers. N allows you to squeeze more in, 009 allows lots of freelance modelling if that’s what you fancy and O is still the most expensive but lovely to see, handle and has real presence. If space is a problem then N is the way to go unless you want to model a micro layout in which case any will fit the bill with careful planning.

I have been pondering this statement. N gauge is actually more of an 'international' gauge. British, Continental, American and Japanese manufacturers all produce models in this scale. It is OO gauge that is more British oriented.
