Well Steve looks like i have sussed it,black lead loose on the side of the motor, now to suss out how to remove the motor!!!

Sounds like a Wales of a good party going on here. Your American Cousin is not familiar with the construction of British Bachmann diesels, but if it
resembles the American line, then I would suspect it has what you chaps would call a "Ringfield" type motor?

If so, I've often found the culprit in the brass tabs that gently press upon the short, stout, and tiny brushes that nest in the motor frame. Sometimes the solder wears, or the brass tab(s) loosen up so that contact becomes quite poor. On the American version, the tab is held in with a Phillips screw, and a quarter turn can do the trick to tighten them. If you happen to remove brass tabs, be careful, as the brushes are held in with a micro spring just under the tab and will go shooting out when the brass tab is removed. Goes without saying you will never see that bad boy again if it comes loose.

In my case, the brass tab holding screw was so loose in its socket that it required a tab of epoxy to cement it firmly into place.

Let me know if any of that makes sense or is even relevant. I've shied away from Bachmann products in general because whilst the shells are supremely detailed and painted, the motors tend to be flimsy, in many cases. Some people tell me that Bachmann has improved on their motors, but having been bitten so many times I am thrice shy.

it was the black lead on the side of the motor,resoldered,however,not completey fixed,if I run the wires from my 9 volt battery to the motor it spins,but if I put the battery directly to the wheels nothing

Back to checking continuity. Are the pickups making good clean contact on the wheels?

ok,worked out how to get the motor out,and I have found another break in the black wire,my only question is now,is does that small brass tag go against the motor body?
