Gosh! I drive more miles to Southampton and back than some of you drive all year. Most weeks I drive more miles in the week than some do all year.

Until the CV-19 bug hit the world I used to drive to Benidorm from the north of England (and back) via Portsmouth and a sailing to Santander. That added quite a few miles to the car which did around 20 000 in a year and I'm retired!

I can't walk far but I can drive far!

Only ever driven abroad once and that was in New Zealand.

I much prefer driving abroad. Generally speaking there is less traffic and those that are on the road tend to have better road manners, and definitely better lane discipline on motorways (gets progressively worse the closer you get to a large city though).
We’ve found some fantastic places just by turning off the tourist routes and exploring.

Totally agree Steve, for example driving the motorway from Pais, to Nevers, if you see 50 cars in total, going both ways, it’s a busy day. We can go from our house to nearest town’ 15 miles, and count the cars on 2 hands.

When we visit the WW1 Western Front region the whole area is like the Mary Celeste. Where the hell is everyone, are they hiding in the cellar? Weird place.

Shops are closed, even the cafes shut for lunch. No wonder there are no cars.

I drive 530 miles per week to commute to work. To say the petrol price increase is starting to bite hard is an understatement when 37mpg is the absolute best I can achieve, 90% of the mileage is on a motorway.

It’s an early 2001 car so £295 for tax, insurance is reasonable for its power output. Still wouldn’t sell it though, I really enjoy driving it, and car prices are laughable compared to what they were pre covid, even for ropey old junk.

Public transport for me is useless, three buses a day to my village all between 10am and 3pm.

Have worked out that on average our car does 200 milers for £32 worth of petrol. Doubt you can do 200 miles on public transport for that much money. Dont include pre booked tickets and special offers.

With the pensioners bus pass you probably can. However, in the car 200 miles would take around 4h (including rest breaks) where the journey on busses would likely be more than doubled.

Rail journeys do include pre-booked and special offers so should be allowed in the comparison. Even air to foreign lands can be accessed for £32 on special offers (one way, the return costs an arm and a leg!)

I dont include special offers ect: because I tend to need transport as and when and journeys are as and when and not planned normally. I am a petrol head and like my car. Other than that I aviod public transport and public anything because I have a lung condition which means if I contract Covid it would be curtails for me. As for buses they take all day to go a few miles. I regularly clock up 50 to 60 MPG on A and B roads and 50 MPG at 70 on a motorway. I have to traval 100 miles to go to Hospital next week imagine how much time that would take by bus. And I would be exposed to god know. how many people. As for overseas travel no interest there for me have travelled all over the world but dont have passport now or want one.
