US based Anglophile. Please do post pictures of you and your son's efforts. It is inherently interesting and inspirational. :)

Thank you

We went to gauge master the weekend and they were really helpful. I bought a planning magazine from Peco and think we’ve settled on a layout. The chap has convinced me to go for a DCC control and to replace my old steel track with newer nickel silver, also my curves might be too tight.
Lots to learn but I think we are making progress

Welcome to our forum. Good luck with your new project, great to see the younger generation getting involved in the hobby.

Dave & luke hello and welcome. its great to hear a father and son having a joint project to learn and progress
best tip is always leave something unfinished or get the basis of a layout done then look to over time and skill progress to tackle different elements. As someone from sussex there are some great clubs and groups around but mainly i would say stick to a scale otherwise
you will quickly have lots of different layouts and ideas going on and it will confuse and frustrate you
