DP2 ?

#1

Post by hunslet »

Hi all.
My brother in law brought this to my attention.
In an episode of "Train Truckers" S 1 , Ep 1 about moving Britannia from Crewe there is a glimpse of a loco numbered DP2.
This loco is supposed to have been scrapped after an accident at Thirsk where it hit a de-railed cement tanker.
What is this then, a reconstruction ? I can find no reference to it on line.
Anybody know more ?
Colin.

A quick research which I have just done on the loco shows it was in service from 1962 - 67 when it was wrecked beyond repair in an accident at Thirsk in 1967.

The loco externally looked similar to a deltic although the side windows arrangement was completely different to the deltic locos, internally it had a 16CSVT power unit rated at 2,700 hp ( 2,000 Kw ) and had a top speed of 90 mph and weighed 1 ton less than a deltic ( 105 tons ) compared to 106 tons of a deltic. The loco was scrapped in 1970.

Hope this helps.

I watched an excerpt from the program and it looks like a replica DP2 is being constructed. Might just be a non working version.

I think we know the details but hunslet was wondering what it was on the program. The parts from DP2 were used as spares on the Class 50's.

Fair enough, I added the details for anybody who may not know about DP2 or ever knew it existed

Yes I understand that, strange there is no mention anywhere of the loco on the TV program.

Thanks for the replies.
After a bit more digging I have the answer according to the "Railway Magazine " of Feb 2019.
The loco is Deltic D9018 Gordon Highlander which had DP2 numbers applied while undergoing restoration at Crewe diesel depot.
So no replica.
