I remember working in a school adjacent to this line in Washington (UK) and the whole building shaking each time a train loaded with ore or coal passed by. The school wasn't near a steep incline either!
Having come on this video by accident I now see that there are a lot of different ones charting how the line was used.
It utilised 2 x 9F's (one at each end) to get up gradients as steep as 1 in 35.
Consett iron ore and coal on the move
Re: Consett iron ore and coal on the move
Yes, Ian, there are a few films of trains to Consett.
Consett, a town where everywhere had a coating of red dust. The buildings. The fields. The washing on the line. The black and white fur on Rex the dog was red. Even Sooty the cat had red fur.
You could see Consett Iron Company building from near where I lived near the Scottish Border. Then one day it disappeared.
