As a member of a U.S. Forum I posed the question on why some are railroads and others railways their side of the pond.

Answers came back ---------

The names are whatever the corporation is. Sometimes a railroad will be renamed railway when sold, bought, or reorganized. It really doesn't matter, in the cause of what they are, they mean the same.
A difference that makes no difference is no difference.

Sometimes its done for legal reasons. In the early part of the last century, the Western Maryland Railroad went into receivership and re-emerged as the Western Maryland Railway and stayed that way 'til the Chessie System takeover.

Somewhere at the back of my mind I seem to remember reading of a U.K. railway company called XYZ Railroad Company, but cannot remember who they were.
