Slopes and how to build question

#1

Post by Iuqsaman »

Hi

With my layout I have decided to go 100% build from resources rather than kit, except track, rolling stock and power etc. that said I’m not sure on the hows. I would like to raise my track and build a gradient to the raised section. I understand the slope gradient thing and have my gradient gradually sloping enough for the rolling stock. As said I’d like to build preferably from wood but the how and what type of wood is having me head scratching, assistance would be appreciated if any of you have any advice?

I have used offcuts of wood. Also inbetween card can be used to make a frame onto wood onto which either a form of paper masché or plaster cloth can be added.
Offcuts of wood can also be used of various thicknesses under the track. Card can also be used or, if you scratchbuild rolling stock, offcuts of plasticard. Even lollypop sticks and tea stirers can be used to start a gradient.
Take a look on Youtube to watch scenery being built. Various ways. No rigid rules. It is what works best for you, so experiment a little. That's all part of the fun!

My layout has 2 gradient sections thankfully not in the scenic section. I used 3 and 5 ply because that was sitting in the garage at the time. For the transistion I used cork and as my transistions are on a curve (A complete pain in the rear end  ) to prevent derailment I had to camber the track

Thanks for the suggestions, it is just coming up with an idea then thinking “how am I going to start that?” The push over the edge is just what you need, maybe now I can fly :D
