Hello from New Zealand!

#1

Post by buzzy »

Hi from New Zealand!

After some half-baked Hornby OO adventures as a kid, I'm getting back into model railways as an adult. It's a great way to spend time with my dad, and it's nice to be building something my kids can play with - and that the older kids can help build!

Our plan is an adaptation of a layout from a Hornby HO/OO track plan book from the mid-eighties: 4.3 x 2.4m or ~8 x 14ft, with a hole in the middle for operators.

Boy have things moved on in the last 30 yeast! DCC happened, models are *much* better, and YouTube is proving to be an amazing learning resource.

I want to build something my kids can use - I have too many memories of model railroads I was never allowed to touch, and operating the thing is what makes it FUN.

Cheers
Buzzy

Welcome - if an older person (your dad) is also to enjoy operation of the railway, consider his ability to access the central area. When we get older we get less supple and can't get under benches as easily as a youngster.

Second that last remark about getting to the centre operating space.
I am doing one at the moment and having a lifting section by the door to make it easier to get to the centre of the layout. I can't crouch down as easy as I used to. It is not much fun getting older.. :D Comes to us all...
