I commuted from Dereham in Norfolk to Cambridge city every weekday for 25 years (1984 - 2009) and lost only 3 days due to weather in all that time. One of those days I got past the cut-off time 10:00 for arrival at work so had to turn around when only 2 miles from work and go home - those were the rules. Only once did I fail to get home again and had to go back to work and kip on the office floor - we got free meals in the canteen that time.

Nowadays folk get ‘snow days’ or can work from home (aka skive off).

They bring the criticism on themselves though - they announced 17 new gritters in a large publicity campaign and even ran a competition to name them.

We had snow over night but not much more than a heavey frost, its melting now. My wife is up a lot in the night because she gets lot of pain which keeps her awake. She said she saw the plough spreading 3 times through the night and we are on a minor road not even a B road which runs from Norham to the direction of Berwick. But it is a back road into Scotland and up to Edinburgh, eventually. Sort cut for those in the know. Very much the pretty way if you are not in a hurry................ John

We had a heavy snowfall around 10pm last night, then not a lot since. It is cold outside, so I'm not venturing far - maybe just as far as the garage aka train room

Very wise stay in the warm. I went to the front door wondering if to vacuum out the car which looks as if it is full of crumbs from sandwiches and crisps all over the place. Thought nahh, give it a miss, to cold this morning.

It was - 6 here yesterday, but got a tad warmer in the afternoon and guess what it snowed
The Lock is frozen over and about 1" (25mm) of snow all round, the sun is now beating down
The cricket square is unplayable, the rugby pitch is frozen, this morning i went out to our trout loch and it was frozen over so i put the rod back in the car and came home.
As FP says there is a priority in getting the gritters out and the roads clear, we have two mountains of salt in the cooncil yard for the roads.

Brilliant blue sky and sunshine today. I've cleared the drive, but won't be going out. Supposed to be "very" cold tomorrow -5/-8.
Our road has a slight incline with a bend, and it is always difficult when icy - so the council, many years ago placed a salt bin on the edge of the green, obviously to salt the road. Last year, one night in the summer, someone with a van stopped, emptied all the salt onto the green and stole the bin - it has not been replaced.

One thing seems to come to mind here is the lack of attention to the roads in the southern part of the country. Up here in the North and Scotland they grit everything and nothing much is missed from what I have seen. The road care seems to be a number one priority up here. We have only lived in the Boarders for 9 months so we we may have things to learn about the area.

Having lived in the Border Region for nigh on 30 years I am amazed how the roads are well gritted and free of snow. What i do know is most farmers help by clearing their bit. When the quarry at Ryal, Northumberland was working (now closed) the wagons had snowploughs fitted and cleared the roads in the area. Then when the 'gritters' arrive, the roads are virtually clear and only a small amount of salt/grit is spread.
