LED lighting
LED lighting
Hi all
A quick question re LED lighting,
Recently purchased from a seller on ebay some single and double lights for use with 12v, having had no problems whatsoever with the singles the doubles are a different story.
Upon connecting to the 12v they start to give off smoke, what I assume is the black paint burning off where they appear to be overpainted on the Leds, however they are getting extremely hot to the touch almost immediately as well.
Now, the sellers dispatches from the UK but I'm pretty certain the lighting comes from China, so should I risk burning off what may be toxic lead based paint from China and can anything be done to reduce the extreme heat the lights are generating.
I am in conversation with the seller so there is no problem sending them back, but i have a use for them if at all possible and have not seen other similar ones from other sellers.
Thanks

Re: LED lighting
I'm guessing they are NOT 12v.
Most people are shocked when they find out how bad I am as an electrician
Re: LED lighting
and probably not led's, as they don't get hot, more than likely normal incandescent bulbs, gow or gor type,
Mike.
Re: LED lighting
They look like GoW stuck to a square of resin. Definitely send them back.
"Not very stable, but incredibly versatile."
Re: LED lighting
If they light up when power is applied either way round they are filament lamps. If they only light when power is connected one way, they are LEDs.
Re: LED lighting
thank you everyone, helpful as always
so the other question is why are they getting so hot, in the picture it can be seen where the bulb have been over painted and the paint is 'crazed' where affected by the heat

Re: LED lighting
GoW bulbs do get hot like any filament bulb. You can try them on a lower voltage say 4.5 or 6v but they may not be bright enough for your needs.
