On a shelf or in a drawer. No track.

I know a few people who have track in their display cabinets which is fine, however I prefer to be able to slide my locos off the shelf. I think some people store them in their original boxes but I think this is why finer detail can come adrift.

It really is a matter of choice. Do what ever is best for you.

I've got several of the Peco loco lifts, which enable locos to be run onto them and then lifted off the tracks. so avoiding handling them.
They can also be stacked to save storage space.

Those loco lifts cost a fortune but great things though.
I adpted mine for 7mm narrow gauge. I only ever bought one.

I think if a loco has been on the layout for a little while it will have collected some dust and it is nice to give them a brush off and make sure they are clean. I use a large very soft 3" expensive paint brush to clean mine. I stress expensive because these cheap paint brushes may well do more damage than dust. Not only that cheap paint brushes don't paint very well either.
So taking loco off and putting it in its box is good opportunity to check it over and dust it off. You cant do that by running it into the fiddle yard.
Anyway I thought fiddle yards were a way of running trains not storing them.

I display 70 or so in my railway room*, the others are in their boxes and I rotate what's on view at the same time as I rotate what's running.

*I don't have sufficient wall space to display them all!

Forgot to say, I've modelling N gauge for 45 yrs so have far too much stock.

I know what you mean Geoff ... A lot of use have the same problem after collecting for many years. I have even more problems as mine are oo and I have close to 200 locos and the rolling stock takes up loads of space as well. I know one or two others on here who have such large collections they need very large rooms to store it all. Some dont know when to stop I think. But we all enjoy them and that is the important thing.
