Background sound for layouts

If you want permanent sounds from different areas of your layout eg chickens squawking in a farm yard, clanking sounds in a busy shunting yard etc I would do it much cheaper by buying mp3 players that use TF or micro SD cards like https://uk.banggood.com/MP3-Lossless-De ... rehouse=CN:

I've got two working on my layout as demonstrated on my Eastfield Coal mine and Gas plant youtube videos. On a medium to large layout make it realistic by adjusting the volume so the sound can only be heard when you are near to the area or you will just get a great cacophony of noise!

I will be adding sounds to my layout at some point and have already had a scout around for free sounds. I found a large resource at the BBC:

I bought 'At the church' but was disappointed by (to me) the cacophony of the bells, I've heard much better ones.

Yes not sure that I would want to add that as an effect in the back ground, it also isn't that clear from the Noch site if the figures come with it I would guess they do as they show it available in different scales.

Think some time at a local station with a microphone and some cheap mp3 players would be as easy

I just copied down some youtube vids and extracted the sound from them

I wouldn’t recommend that method - technically a breach of copyright unless you have specific permission of the person who originally made the video.

I guess it depends on what sounds you want, a system that I would like would sense a train arriving at a station, play brake squeals, station noise building up, closing of doors, whistle and then your all ready to go, having a constantly noisy station doesn't really appeal, and while most of the train noises can be generated with sound loco chips it would be handy to have it in the station

still fancy the Hornby noisy van, might have to check the birthday list

Using a free app like Audacity you can take different sound files and edit them into the kind of sequence you're after.
