Some further research on another forum has revealed that they were painted either white or cream up to 1942 when they changed to grey for war-time reasons (visibility to aircraft). The comments above about while lead in the pain and reaction to soot & grime are spot on.

Thank you all for your help with this, I'm painting mine grey - after all it is a model being viewed mainly from about and white roofs would stick out like a sore thumb.

As was mentioned earlier very often workshops would use what ever they had available or what ever regulations were in place at any given time. War time was certainly a difficult time. So there was no simple answer to this question in the first place.
