What is this stuff made of is it made from fibre or some kind of rubber material. I cant see much detail in the picture. Just wondered because if it has any loose dust or fibre it will not be long before your locos and axle wheels start picking it up and you will be cleaning and serving everything, quite quickly. One problem you may find using underlay is it is not a solid firm and flat surface which can cause problems especially with points which have to be firmly fixed as flat as possible as loosely points which are not pinned down correctly tend to bow in the middle leading to running problems later.

Cork can’t be as expensive as you say unless you have a huge layout. Only needs to go under the track.

Cork laminate floor underlay is £30 for 10 square meters.
