Don't forget 2 things

1 because everything is in one box and all in the room you are trying to cool the free standing ones are very noisy

2 because they vent cooled air through the vent hose as they all use room air to cool the heated gas in the evaporator they are give less than 50% of the claimed cooling figure so a 9000btu unit is only delivering around 4000btu of cooling which with today's temperature is almost worthless.

The best compromise as a true split system is rather expensive is to try and get one of The American style through window unit, they are a lot quieter and closer to their claimed rating.

They are twice the price of a stand alone but well worth the expence because they actually work.

Just got home from work where the best place to be was the milk freezer (about the size of a small garage).

Paul, sorry your units were poor. Ours is 14 years old, and still giving excellent service. We have tested with thermometer, and temp drop, in lounge, is vast. May be, its the make, or we have just been lucky. Ours does exactly what the instructions say it does, and , as it was 40, here, yesterday afternoon, outside, we were very content.

Yes the evaporative principle works but on this scale a total waste of money.

We had a similar one, last year, for heather, next to her chair. Was fine for 2 weeks, then stopped. Full refund given, and they did not want it back. It was ok, when it was running, H, was happy with concept.

What make is it, and whats it's claimed BTU rating?

Is it a single or double hose design, double is much better than single as they use one hose to suck air in to cool the evaporator instead of using the cooled room air.
