Barry my mate in Australia has sleep apnea. They had an 18 hour power cut a few weeks ago and he had to stay awake for all that time. I said he should get a backup power supply.

As others have mentioned, 'take things easy'. After all life is much simpler in the slow lane.

My wife has sleep apnea and has to use a machine at night. Her machine has a battery supply back-up. Fortunately it has never been needed (that we know of).

Take it easy Steve as old age doesn’t come itself...... at least you have model railways to thank for keeping your marbles aligned !

My 90 year old father has dementia and With hindsight I don’t think it was helped by not having any real out of work interests after stopping work after many years...... this was one of the prime reasons I took up this hobby a few year back and with 4-6 years to go to retirement I want to make sure I have something challenging and indoors ( inportant in these Northerly parts) to continue to occupy my time and mind.

Richard, that is so true. When I retired (early - financial crash 2008. I was a casualty not the cause - I think ) I spent a few years ticking off the to do list - holidays, car restoration, model railways, garden, decorating......and then I got bored.

I needed something to get me out of the house - started stacking shelves in a supermarket and I’m now their security manager. I realised, only recently that although I was ready to stop working for the bank, I wasn’t ready for the comfy chair in front of the fire - and I missed meeting people.

In my current role I certainly get to meet a ‘variety’ of people but I guess I will have to get someone else to chase them in future. And to think, only last Saturday I had to intervene in four separate fights outside the shop. Won’t happen now.

As for my health, if they get on top of the heart problem I have dementia to look forward to - it’s claimed quite a few on my mum’s side of the family.

Doesn't always follow Steve. Both my parents shuffled off with heart disease - and as yet I am as sound as a bell and now older than either of them when they drew their last. R-

What a start for the new year! Think positive! Lots of us on here are wrecks, decrepid, and otherwise fit for the knackers yard. You did a good job on my Black 5 and I did promise that you can do a repaint and renumber on a Duchess, so start thinking about it!
Seriously, do what the medics tell you and take it easy. Only a few more weeks for Bluebell outings (not forgetting FS at the Mid Hants)

Because a member of the family had dementia does not mean others in the family will follow suit. My father-in-law ended his days with it yet his father and grandfather both reached 100 and died of old age nothing more.

I’ve not lost my sense of humour (assuming I had one in the first place ). The Duchess will be a real challenge whether I’m fit or not! And I need to make some spare cash for my Hornby pre-orders so you’re on.

We caught the last steaming day of 2019 at the Bluebell with granddaughter no. 1 last week - another convert to steam. I think I will skip FS at the Mid Hants, it’s ferociously expensive and a bit close to my Barcelona trip so SWMBO may be a bit ‘twitchy’ if I disappear for that as well.
